ASTRO, the American Society for Radiation Oncology is looking for a seasoned communications and public affairs professional to guide the Society in elevating the profile of the field of Radiation Oncology. This individual will develop strategies that expand the knowledge and awareness of the importance of radiation oncology and its critical role in curing cancer among the public, referring physicians, media and relevant stakeholder’s. This individual will also be responsible for overseeing the implementation of tactics that emphasize expanding reach, relevance and impact with external audiences. Major responsibilities will include leading the development and implementation of a new external affairs function which increases visibility across all major print, broadcast, online, social and digital media outlets; establishing and implementing the department structure, goals and objectives and operational processes and procedures; building strong internal relationships and collaborating across ASTRO’s departments; developing strong relationships with healthcare and cancer related societies, foundations, patient advocacy groups to advance the mission of ASTRO; overseeing media strategies and tactics to promote the science and raise the profile of the field, including promotion of studies presented at ASTRO scientific and educational meetings; providing leadership in developing our external brand strategy and positioning of the society to assure that ASTRO’s voice is heard with key influencers; providing counsel to association leadership and staff on key public relations and advocacy issues; creating, maintaining and promoting a national speakers’ bureau of patients, family members and others who can speak authoritatively on the benefits of radiation therapy; improving and expanding current patient materials; assuring consistent message style, brand and visual identity; working to identify ideas for videos, infographics, podcasts and digital/social media content that expands our reach and is visually appealing and monitoring the reach and effectiveness of all external communication efforts.

Qualified Candidates will have:
Bachelor’s degree in related field, master’s preferred; healthcare experience preferred.
10 years of progressively responsible experience in the field of public affairs, public relations, communications or within an agency.
Demonstrated experience developing and executing public affairs and communications campaigns to broaden and enhance the reach of an organization.
Previous experience in public opinion research and using that research in message development, strategy and measuring achievement of goals.
Strong track record of strategic thinking, creativity and effective problem-solving.
Experience in leading collaborations across an organization and managing staff.
Previous experience developing and managing budgets and establishing operating processes and procedures.
Ability to work with volunteer leaders to maximize their effectiveness.
Outstanding written and verbal communications skills with the ability to distill complex and technical issues into understandable and persuasive communications and messages that advance our positions.
Exceptional writing skills and effective editor.
Strong skills in building a digital/social media presence and using those tools to advance our goals.
Demonstrated ability to build strong partnerships internally and externally.
Strong project and time management skills with the ability to handle multiple projects and meet critical deadlines.
