GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR A STRONG ADVOCATE OF TRUCKING SAFETY
The American Trucking Associations (ATA), the nation’s leading trade and lobby association representing the trucking industry, is currently seeking a Director of Safety Policy. This position is responsible for promoting and defending the interests of ATA’s members on driver and carrier safety issues as well as providing technical assistance to members seeking to understand and comply with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs) and Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) regulations.
This position will report to the VP, of Safety Policy, Connectivity & Technology and has direct contact with ATA members and various governmental agencies.
Serve as a staff specialist on Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and PHMSA regulations, compliance, enforcement practices, safety rating processes and relevant agency data systems.
Provide guidance and answer inquiries from ATA members, state trucking associations, councils and conferences on compliance with the FMCSRs and PHMSA regulations.
Prepare issue summaries, whitepapers, and other documents to help members understand and comply with the FMCSRs and PHMSA regulations and to support both regulatory and legislative advocacy efforts.
Serve as staff lead for ATA Committees including Safety Policy Committee, Hazardous Materials Committee, and the Safety Management Council Regulations Committee.
Prepare regulatory filings, draft testimony and other documents to advance ATA’s advocacy and member services objectives.
Support the ATA Legislative Affairs Division’s efforts to educate lawmakers and their respective staff members on driver and carrier safety issues.
Present at conferences and participate in working groups to communicate and advance ATA positions and priorities to external stakeholders.
Assist the E.V.P. of Advocacy and V.P. of Safety Policy, Connectivity & Technology in their interactions with FMCSA, CVSA, transportation-related trade associations and other organizations to promote and defend the interests of ATA’s members.
Support the ATA Office of Public Affairs by providing technical assistance needed to respond to media inquiries and the preparation of press releases.
BA/BS degree plus 3 – 5 years of work experience, preferably in government affairs, policy and advocacy, or in the trucking industry generally. Knowledge of FMCSRs and the federal regulatory process required; familiarity with PHMSA regulations desirable. Excellent communication skills (both written and oral); excellent presentation skills for both large and small groups; capable of communicating complex regulatory and legislative initiatives in straightforward language.
