Position Summary: The Senior Director, Global Programs and Resource Development, leads the association’s programming and resources that contribute to thought leadership and knowledge generation in international education. The Senior Director initiates cross-cutting and innovative products, publications, programs, and services that enhance NAFSA’s reputation as a leader in higher education internationalization and global learning, many of which provide revenue to the association.
The Senior Director is responsible for managing the research and scholarship agenda for the organization, leading intellectual collaboration across departments to develop high-quality learning resources and publications relevant to the field of international education. Resources include books, booklets, articles, e-books, and e-publications.
The program portfolio for the Senior Director includes, but is not limited to, the NAFSA Worldview initiative, the Global Dialogue Fellows Program, Latin America Forum, Africa Forum, NAFSA Cuba Engagement Initiative, Seminar on Peace and Global Civil Society, and the Simon Award for Campus Internationalization. Responsibilities include substantial involvement with leaders outside of the U.S. and familiarity with global trends and constituencies.
The Senior Director provides strategic leadership for the department, keeping abreast of the latest developments in the field, bringing visibility to NAFSA’s work in international higher education, building relationships, and actively representing NAFSA externally. The incumbent will work in close collaboration with other colleagues in Knowledge Development, and in cooperation with the Deputy Executive Director. Successful and smooth coordination with other departments, including Marketing, Publications, Leadership and Professional Development Services, Public Policy, and Web Services is required. Higher education internationalization is a component of all NAFSA knowledge domains, and collaboration with other groups in the professional development area is expected.
Major Functions and Responsibilities
Work closely with the Deputy Executive Director, Knowledge Development, to develop long-term strategies for building NAFSA’s capacity and reputation as a leader in knowledge development and thought generation in international education (IE).
Maintain a high-level knowledge of trends in global learning, academic research in the field, and the internationalization of higher education.
Develop innovative products, publications, programs, and services to support the NAFSA Strategic Plan, build NAFSA’s reputation, and create new revenue streams.
Evaluate potential opportunities in collaboration with other colleagues.
Develop, monitor, and manage a budget for the department’s programs.
Lead a team that develops programs and products and conceptualizes publications to contribute to the field and serves campus leaders in global learning and internationalization.
Motivate and support the team in developing high quality and timely programs, publications, and products for the IE community.
Create systems that ensure effective management and evaluation of programs, publications, products, and services.

Provide regular reports to the Deputy Executive Director on the strategies and accomplishments of the department and to other audiences, as requested.
Ensure that a comprehensive program of products, publications, and services is developed throughout the year and for the NAFSA annual conference.
Guide the development of global programs and publications and to ensure high quality and revenue potential, and include strategies to link to other NAFSA products and services.
Manage and develop the global and strategic partnership programs, such as the Global Dialogue Fellows Program.
Manage the NAFSA Worldview initiative, working with the Deputy Executive Director on specific programs and resources designed to highlight the relationship between IE and international affairs.
Lead the conceptualization of publications and identification of authors, by cross-departmental collaboration. And working closely with the Publications team to identify conceptualize appropriate learning assets, and collaborate around production.
Produce activities on topics related to global learning internationalization, assessment, and pedagogy.
Work collaboratively with Marketing, Web, and Publications teams to set targets and key performance indicators for Web-based materials, program attendance, and sales of publications and products and develop strategies to ensure they are met.
Working with the marketing department, develop materials appropriate for the various market segments represented by the Knowledge Development (KD) spectrum of programs, products and services.
Arrange for NAFSA specific sessions at other significant associations’ meetings.
Utilize NAFSA professional networks and other outreach channels to build collaboration and engagement around knowledge development and sharing.
Increase leverage and lifespan of products, publications, and services by working closely with colleagues in other departments.
Assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Deputy Executive Director, Knowledge Development.
Internally, the Senior Director, Global Programs and Resource Development, is a member of the Knowledge Development (KD) department, which places a premium on inter-departmental collaboration. The Senior Director is expected to contribute ideas and energy to all KD projects. It is also expected that the Senior Director lead regular cross-departmental meetings to ensure product development to meet the needs of NAFSA’s diverse audience.
As a senior manager, the interests of the association shall guide decision-making, and the senior director is expected to become knowledgeable about the organization as a whole. Association members expect colleagues to be accessible and responsive, to convey a positive attitude, and to exhibit a high degree of professionalism.
Workday is generally 9:00 am-5:00 pm. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, it is 8:30 am-5:30 pm Monday through Thursday and 9:00 am-12:00 pm on Friday. Travel is required occasionally.
Participation in the NAFSA annual conference the week of Memorial Day, including the holiday itself, is a job requirement. The annual conference is held in varying cities in the U.S.
Required Skills and Experience:
Master’s degree or equivalent experience in higher education, international development, organizational management, or publishing.
A proven track record of managing the development of products and services for professional development information, publications, and training. Demonstrated capability in developing new products and services with revenue potential.
At least eight (8) years of work experience in international or higher education or related association context.
Demonstrated project management ability, including designing, budgeting, assessment, staff supervision, and reporting.
Excellent writing and editing skills.
Excellent oral communication skills including public presentation.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Prior work in a membership, management, or non-profit organization.
Experience developing and/or managing resources and publications.
