The Communications Manager will develop and manage targeted efforts and activities to promote the association’s key objectives, brand and mission. The candidate will also play a key role to implement an integrated communications strategy to support the goals and objectives of the ARC (ADVANCE Resource and Coordination) Network project which seeks to advance the diversity of women among STEM faculty. The ideal candidate must possess solid experience in communications/public relations background with knowledge, skills and abilities to perform with confidence the various functions of the position. The candidate must be a self-starter who can thrive independently, adapt quickly, and collaborate successfully with his/her peers. The candidate must have strong writing, proofreading and editing skills for story development and placement in targeted press outlets. Strong verbal and interpersonal skills along with the ability to prioritize and multi-task with success is required. The candidate is expected to have good judgement and instinct using PR tools, tactics and techniques to strategically carry out and execute programs and initiatives. This candidate must utilize the fundamentals of public relations standards and ethics in his/her work. Availability for travel and after-work events may be required.
Manage all aspects of communications, marketing and public relations for AWIS, its chapters and affiliates, and board
Develop strategies and media relations tactics to help identify story telling opportunities and amplify AWIS key messages and brand
Provide writing and coordination for AWIS collateral materials including the quarterly magazine, biweekly newsletter, research reports, and advocacy tools and resources
Serve as the day-to-day liaison with media outreach efforts related to AWIS membership and counterparts at partner organizations and institutions
Proactively pitch story ideas to the media, manage incoming media requests and follow up in a timely manner and track impressions and hits
Work with communications, photography and videography vendors and consultants; experience negotiating contracts with such vendors and ensuring successful outcomes
Create content for various media related documents, including, but not limited to, press releases, media advisories, blogs, talking points, media reports and analyses, digital, web and social media, and messaging documents, with attention to detail to ensure accuracy of information

Bachelor’s degree required in communications, journalism, public relations, or digital media
Minimum of 8-10 years of progressive communications and public relations experience with a national association or in a nonprofit environment
Media relations experience and pitching to the media of different disciplines
Experience with digital and social media content creation
Outstanding written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
Strong organizational, time management and multi-tasking abilities
Proficiency with software including MS Office as well as project management tools, online marketing and CMS platforms, and newswire services
Some proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Premiere)
Fluency and execution with social media outreach, understanding of analytics, and content creation for social media platforms including, but not limited to, LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Hootsuite, etc.
Demonstrated skills, knowledge, and experience in the creation and execution of marketing and communications campaigns and activities for national audiences
Outstanding written and oral communications skills with the ability to convey information in an easy to understand, compelling, and engaging manner
Excellent project and time management skills with the ability to multitask, shift priorities, and work in a deadline-oriented, fast-paced environment
Strong interpersonal communications skills with the ability to work as part of team and collaborate and engage effectively with membership chapters, affiliates and partners
Exercise good judgment and making sound decisions that demonstrate problem solving ability, adaptability and responsiveness to change
Ability to think critically and analytically, and when needed, craft and execute strategic, rapid-response communications in a timely manner
Understanding of the culture of scientific professionals and knowledge of STEM industries a significant asset
Some travel required
