Organization Description Public Counsel is the nation's largest not-for-profit law firm specializing in delivering pro bono legal services. Founded in 1970, it is dedicated to advancing equal justice under law and addressing economic, racial, and other inequities by delivering free legal and social services to the most vulnerable members of our community. Public Counsel operates eight legal projects: Children’s Rights, Community Development, Consumer Rights, Homelessness Prevention, Immigrants’ Rights, Veterans’ Rights, the Audrey Irmas Project for Women & Girls’ Rights and the impact litigation project, Opportunity Under Law. Public Counsel operates with a $13 million budget, a staff of approximately 120 and a 79-person board of directors. Position Description Public Counsel is seeking a VP of Finance to take the helm of the Finance Department at an exciting juncture in the organization’s history. The new VP will bring financial leadership and management support to ensure that Public Counsel continues to be an exceptionally strong mission-driven, community focused organization while continually enhancing, modernizing and measuring the finance and accounting environment. The Vice President of Finance will serve as an essential part of the senior management team, advising the President/CEO and the Board of Directors in planning for future growth and financial sustainability to support Public Counsel’s groundbreaking legal work. Reporting to the CEO, the Vice President of Finance will lead the Finance team (currently including a Director of Finance, an Accounting Clerk and a Database Coordinator) in planning, budgeting, accounting and reporting on a diversified funding stream, including donations, private grants, government contracts and attorney fees. Qualifications The successful candidate will be an experienced non-profit financial and accounting professional with the ability to manage all facets of the accounting cycle, from the transactional level to month-end and annual close, and a track record of building sustainable financial systems and processes. The VP will have proficiency in computerized accounting packages, windows-based network applications and Microsoft Office application. Experience with Financial Edge and Raiser’s Edge software strongly preferred. In addition, candidates should have government grant management and compliance experience, strong organizational and administrative skills and the ability to successfully manage complex projects and multiple, competing priorities on various timelines.
