The Acquisitions Editor works with the Editor-in-Chief, Acquisitions Coordinator, and Publisher to solicit, evaluate, and secure book-length manuscripts from authors and performs all developmental activities for manuscripts acquired, ensuring that they meet established standards for quality and content. The Acquisitions Editor provides strategic direction to APA’s book publishing program and develops new authors, manages existing relationships, develops series concepts, assists in the development of digital publishing, and manages the proposal submission process. The Acquisitions Editor works with the editorial, sales and marketing, and management teams to bring forth the best possible titles and represents APA in a professional manner as an easily available liaison with existing authors, potential authors, staff, and consumers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Solicits, secures, and coordinates the acquisition of 25-35 book-length manuscripts each year, including recruiting authors, selecting book topics, evaluating manuscripts, preparing P&Ls, budgeting and sales forecasting, and negotiating contracts.
Serves as main point of contact between APA Publishing and authors and editors during the acquisition process. Supports author needs throughout the publishing relationship.
Acts as staff liaison to the APP Editorial Advisory Board and coordinates annual staff and author functions at the annual APA meeting.
Performs market research to develop business intelligence related to list.
Advises authors, editorial staff, support personnel, and contractors on manuscript preparation, status and release of upcoming books.
Participates in preparation of annual budget. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
