The California Lawyers Association (CLA) is soliciting applications for the position of its inaugural Executive Director. The CLA, came into existence in January 2018; emerging from enabling legislation as the second largest voluntary bar association in the country, second only to the American Bar Association. Initially the CLA consists of all of the 16 Sections (about 50,000 members) and the California Young Lawyers Association (almost 50,000 members), which were formerly part of the State Bar of California. More information about the CLA can be found on its website, at https://calawyers.org. The immediate task of the Executive Director will be to work with CLA leadership to mold CLA infrastructure and staff to create a foundation for a superior member-focused voluntary bar association.
As the CLA is, on the one hand, the second largest voluntary bar association in the country, and on the other, a “start up” organization, this unique opportunity requires the successful candidate to be entrepreneurial, resourceful and creative as well as possessing background knowledge of structures, dynamics and issues facing organizations of lawyers. The CLA is at its core an organization serving its Sections and its Sections’ members. Accordingly, the Executive Director must have a deep understanding of the legal profession - its evolution and current and future challenges.
The Executive Director will oversee the CLA’s staff operation at the organization’s new headquarters in Sacramento, California and will be responsible for leading, managing and executing the affairs of the Association as directed by CLA’s leadership and implementing its policies to the overall benefit of the organization, its constituent entitles and members.
