The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) is the world’s largest organization dedicated to improving mathematics education for all students. NCTM is the public voice of math education, providing vision, leadership, and professional development to teachers.
NCTM is seeking an Art Director to oversee NCTM’s visual brand for all publications, products, and collateral materials, including books, journals, conferences, special products/services, and marketing materials.
Design and Production
Establish and ensure NCTM visual brand.
Enhance NCTM’s visual brand through forward-thinking graphic design concepts and solutions.
Design and produce custom print and digital media.
Manage projects from concept to final delivery.
Formulate concepts and supervise staff executing design work for publications, marketing materials, conference collaterals, and web pages.
Collaborate with internal clients to develop creative and cost-effective marketing and publishing solutions.
Develop, implement and manage scheduling for projects.
Reviews, approves and presents final layouts to internal clients for approval.
Maintains production files and oversees asset inventory.
Monitors trends and best practices in design and production and makes appropriate recommendations to management.
Manage the design and production of various publications, marketing materials, and conference collaterals.
Identifies and recruits, as needed, outside design and production professionals.
Ensure that external vendor work meets NCTM’s quality standards.
Identify and address production problems.
Develop and manage a budget for print expenditures.
Liaises with design firms, freelancers, printers, composition, and other vendors.
Negotiate best price structure with printers and ensure the best method of delivery.
Consult with IT and Publications department heads on any requirements or changes needed to maintain current hardware and/or software capabilities.
Participate in the budget preparation process.
Provide input to publications department head regarding department structure and staffing needs.
Direct supervisor for (3) Production Design Specialists.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Superior understanding of design concepts and typography.
Ability to conceptualize, plan, and implement graphic designs in a variety of media.
Solid demonstrated proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite.
InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator required.
Ability to use Microsoft Office Applications.
Excellent time management skills.
Excellent presentation and interpersonal skills.
Extensive experience in print buying.
Ability to manage people and encourage teamwork.
Ability to work independently and cooperatively with department staff and staff of other departments.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in Design.
7-10 years’ design and publications experience.
3-5 years of management experience.
