The Director of Communications will work collaboratively with senior association leadership to develop and implement communications strategies to strengthen IFDA’s role and reputation as a leader and authoritative voice and to promote the role and value of the foodservice distribution industry.
Collaborate with the CEO and senior Association leadership to develop and implement communications strategies that will enhance IFDA’s impact and support its mission, goals and strategic plan.
Identify significant opportunities for IFDA to promote the many positive aspects of foodservice distribution to the public, Washington regulators/legislators and channel partners.
Increase engagement by informing IFDA’s members about Association priorities and efforts.
Lead the organizational response to inquiries about IFDA and the foodservice distribution industry, conduct media interviews and respond to information requests.
Create a defensive strategy in the event of negative industry publicity.
Foster long-term working relationships with key stakeholder audiences including IFDA members, trade press, Washington press/influencers, national media, social media, bloggers, etc.
Additional Responsibilities and Duties:
Build and foster collaborative relationships with all departments within IFDA to stay abreast of initiatives that provide communications opportunities.
Create communications materials including the development of news releases, media pitches, feature stories and other editorial content.
Develop prepared remarks, speeches, presentations and other communications for IFDA staff and volunteer leadership.
Create and manage a database of external communications contacts.
Develop and oversee the communications department annual budget.
Collaborate with the Director, Marketing on various Association priorities and initiatives.
Manage outside vendor relationships.

Knowledge,Skills and Abilities Required:
Strong leadership and management abilities.
Skilled in developing strategies that leverage all communications media including print, digital and social.
Journalistic ability to grasp complex subjects, understand different story angles and effectively communicate them both in writing and verbally.
Ability to generate consensus and work effectively with staff at all levels.
Willingness to execute day to day tasks and work independently.
Ability to prioritize competing tasks and achieve objectives.
Strong writing, editing and verbal communications skills.
Great storyteller with an inquisitive mind and ability to think critically.
Education and Experience Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or a related discipline.
7+ years of experience in a communications role with a history of increasing responsibility.
A strong track record of positioning an organization to achieve measureable success in the communications area.
Experience with Microsoft Office and association databases (i.e. iMIS).
Travel: Minimal overnight travel (up to 15%) by land and/or air.
