The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is seeking a managing editor for its award-winning magazine, ASBMB Today. The managing editor has to have a keen sense for what is scientifically newsworthy and important to the members of ASBMB as well as a deep appreciation for storytelling. The monthly print and digital magazine reports on budgetary and legislative issues that affect biomedical researchers, profiles interesting scientists, investigate scientific controversies and explores the intricacies of groundbreaking research. The magazine also offers a robust perspectives section containing opinion pieces and personal essays. The print edition of the magazine is mailed to all members of the ASBMB. The online edition of the magazine is freely available to the public at www.asbmb.org/asbmbtoday.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Provides substantive editing for all of the magazine’s contributors (staff members, students, scientists and society committee members).
Works closely with ASBMB’s graphic designer and executive editor on the magazine’s layout and cover development
Meets publication deadlines.
Monitors news and social media to generate story ideas and promote content.
Liaises with contract copy editor and contract proofreader.
Collaborates with Web editors to improve digital storytelling.
Writes news briefs, obituaries and spot news/features as needed.
Identifies, recruits and trains external contributors.
Monitors Web traffic and adjust content strategy as needed.
Positions may be reassigned and responsibilities may be modified or changed at any time to fulfill organizational requirements.
Skills and Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required; Ph.D. in life sciences preferred.
Five years of experience in a newsroom environment, preferably as an editor.
Experience training new writers in a classroom/workshop or newsroom.
Expert at planning but flexible when needed.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Expert at Associated Press style.
Experience with online publishing.
Familiarity with print publishing processes.
Familiarity with Adobe InDesign.
Familiarity with or willingness to learn Ektron content-management system.
ASBMB Today offers a unique training program for students and scientists interested in pursuing careers in science journalism/communication and for those who want to build their writing portfolios. The managing editor is the primary teacher and editor for those writers. Preference will be given to candidates with experience teaching journalism in a classroom/workshop environment and/or candidates who have closely mentored emerging writers in a newsroom.
