The American Student Dental Association (ASDA) was founded in 1971 and is the largest dental student organization in the United States. With a membership of more than 24,000, ASDA represents 94% of dental students from all 66 dental schools. ASDA representatives vote in the ADA House of Delegates, sit on most ADA councils and commissions and comprise one of the most respected student organizations in the nation. ASDA’s mission is to protect and advance the rights, interests and welfare of dental students. ASDA introduces students to lifelong involvement in organized dentistry and provides services, information, education, representation and advocacy.
ASDA is located off Michigan Avenue, in downtown Chicago, with a staff of 14 and an operating budget of $4.5 million.
The ASDA Publications Manager is responsible for managing ASDA’s print and electronic publications and relationships with outside vendors. Oversees design and production of publications. Serves as liaison to Editorial Board. Manages student-written blog and Word of Mouth e-newsletter.
Manage the art, content direction, design and production process for Contour and student handbooks. Identify topics in line with strategic plan and member research data.
Collect/manage incoming articles and oversees copyright/permission for each author. Partner with freelancers to edit and/or write articles.
Provide article copy, artwork and advertisements to freelance designer for layout of Contour. Review and edit publications after layout and printers’ proof. Provide final approval of print-ready files.
Develop and monitor publication policies, organization, workflow and procedures to ensure high-quality, cost-effective production and distribution of ASDA publications.
Manage relationships with vendors for all print and digital publications. Oversee selection process and identify opportunities for cost savings and enhancements.
Manage the content, direction and production process for ASDA’s blog, Mouthing Off and edit incoming posts.
Manage digital publications to develop new opportunities and evaluate technologies to grow ASDA’s digital publication presence.
Manage the publications section of ASDA website including featured content, previews, and updates after each published issue.
Serve as staff liaison to the Editorial Board.
Write content for monthly Word of Mouth e-newsletter.
Manage annual USPS statements of ownerships process for print publications.
Copyedit lead article for The Polished Predental e-newsletter.
Oversee ASDA’s stock photography subscription and provide artwork for use by other departments.
Manage publications’ follow-up: correspondence with authors, send marked up copies to U.S. Post Office and archive past publications.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Some travel and weekend work is required.
Bachelor's degree in journalism or communications-related field.
Five or more years experience writing and editing articles in a publishing environment, preferably for an association.
Knowledge of healthcare industry is desirable.
Experience working with designers to provide art direction for publications.
Demonstrated experience managing volunteers.
Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills.
Proficient in A.P. style.
Excellent communication, time management, problem-solving and organizational skills.
Must be professional, creative, detail-oriented and have excellent interpersonal skills.
Experience using MAC and WordPress or other blog software encouraged. Knowledge of desktop publishing and photo software (InDesign and Adobe Photoshop) a plus.
