Provides primary staff support to the Society’s Training Committee and all SSO-approved fellowship training programs. Functions as the lead staff person on Society issues/matters related to the 30 ACGME-approved Complex General Surgical Oncology (CGSO) Fellowship Programs and the 50 SSO-approved Breast Oncology Fellowship programs, providing guidance and support to these programs and the participating program directors. Manages the annual surgical oncology and breast oncology fellowship matches. In this role, the manager is expected to work to automate many of the processes involved in the management of these programs and to develop or streamline the policies and procedures needed for their effective management. In addition, this role will work with the SSO Assistant Director, Education and Meetings to develop and implement the SSO Annual Fellows Institute and Complex General Surgical Oncology Board Review Course.
Duties and Responsibilities
Acts as primary staff support in managing and overseeing the ACGME-approved CGSO Fellowship Programs and the SSO-approved Breast Oncology Fellowship Programs. Specific responsibilities include:
Serves as lead staff person for the following SSO Committees:
CGSO Program Director Committee
Breast Program Director Sub Committee
Fellows Sub Committee
Provides overall staff support to committees listed above and management of committee projects; serves as the lead staff person for communications with outside organizations such as ACGME, ABS and ASBrS.
Manages all aspects of the annual SSO Breast Oncology Fellowship match; assists in the coordination of the CGSO Fellowship match with ERAS and NRMP
Manages all aspects of the Breast Fellowship Program approval process; including the acceptance and review of new applications, oversight and execution of program site visits, collection of interim documentation from approved programs and administration oversight of breast fellowship op-logs, maintained and hosted by the ACGME.
Manages coordination of Fellows Lounge at SSO Annual Cancer Symposium.
Works with the Director of Education, Director of Marking and Communications and Training Committee to identify effective outreach and marketing strategies to general surgery residents regarding the availability and advantages of additional fellowship training in surgical oncology and/or breast oncology. Responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of these outreach and marketing efforts.
Works with the Manager of IT to ensure the SSO Web site is updated with current descriptions of all SSO approved and ACGME approved fellowship programs, information on site visit and review processes, training program curricula changes, as well as relevant match information and materials.
Prepares all correspondence, committee reports, promotional materials, applications, etc. regarding the scope of work outlined above.
Works with the Director of Education to develop and manage annual operating budgets related to these programs.
Remains current with developments on specialty accreditation, certification and curriculum requirements/changes.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Fellows Institute and Complex General Surgical Oncology Board Review Course
Works with the Assistant Director, Education and Meetings to develop and implement the course curriculum for the SSO Annual Fellows Institute Program and Complex General Surgical Oncology Board Review Course. Specific responsibilities include:
Collaborates with assigned volunteer work group to coordinate development of the course curriculum and lab rotations (lab rotations are only applicable to the Fellows Institute Program)
Assist in the procurement of grant funding and in-kind equipment, including submitting funding and/or equipment requests

A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
A minimum of 5 years of management experience in medical or health care association management.
Strong familiarity with specialty training and accreditation issues within a medical specialty association environment preferred.
A professional presence and well-rounded knowledge of health care and organized medicine.
Excellent organizational, analytical, and project management skills.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
Experience with the administration of residency training and/or other graduate medical education programs is a plus.
Highly organized with strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office programs.
10% travel required.
