National trade association representing a major manufacturing, wholesale and retail industry seeks to hire an experienced communications professional for the position of Director of Communications and Public Affairs. This position will work collaboratively with senior leadership to develop and implement communication strategies to broaden the impact of the association’s advocacy efforts and oversee organizational messaging. This position is based in Alexandria, VA.
Collaborate with the CEO and senior leadership to develop proactive communications strategies that will increase visibility and deepen impact.
Develop and refine association’s core messages to ensure organizational consistency.
Oversee communications including rapid response, incoming queries, preparation and submission of columns, letters to the editor, Op-Eds and other prospective pitches.
Identify relevant media and public policy issues that can be leveraged to support association’s work.
Serve as digital media coordinator and executive editor for email, website and digital advocacy platforms.
Coordinate with outside marketing / PR firm(s) to manage the development, distribution and maintenance of print and electronic collateral.
Build and maintain relationships with association’s members, broader industry contacts and third-party groups to advance the industry’s advocacy objectives.
Establish goals, benchmarks and timelines for communications campaigns.
Significant communications experience that includes a blend of campaign communications, crisis communications, advocacy, and/or public policy and media relations
A strong track record of positioning an organization, candidate or elected official to achieve tangible outcomes in a competitive communications environment
Excellent writing and messaging skills and the ability to translate complex public policy issues into easily understood advocacy communications
Proven ability to develop and implement a social media strategy including online community management with a focus on digital advocacy
Demonstrated project and editorial calendar management skills and ability to align them with industry objectives
Experience preparing and staffing candidates, elected officials, executives and/or personnel for media interactions
Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously while meeting tight deadlines
Undergraduate or Master’s degree in relevant subject area is desirable
