Seeking an Independent Contractor who will be responsible for oversight of all finance, accounting, and reporting activities in the areas of sales and use tax and fund accounting.
Sales and Use Tax
Prepare sales and use tax returns on a monthly and quarterly basis; maintain documentation in files as an audit trail.
Ensure all tax payments are made in a timely fashion.
Coordinate with outside sales tax accountants to register with states for sales and use tax reporting purposes and resolve tax issues.
Set up information system to monitor and maintain tax compliance.
Research sales/use tax issues. Prepare necessary documentation to obtain exemption when applicable.
Prepare and maintain a sales/use tax calendar.
Assist in tax abatement projects.
Comply with vendors requests for Form W-9 and exemption certificates.
Assist in year-end audit and preparation of audit schedules.
Correspond with government agencies.
Performs research of various federal and state tax issues to provide supported and sound conclusions to tax issues.
Record all fund transactions in accounting software.
Reconcile various accounts and promptly research and correct any variances.
Perform month-end reconciliations, and account closings. Promptly research and correct any variances.
Report on fund activities, balances and other related financial matters on a regular basis (monthly, quarterly, and annually).
Report donor gifts and pledges and reconcile with data in accounting software.
Prepare disbursement requests for approval by the Controller for all disbursements from the funds.
Generate donor acknowledgement letters, general letters, and routine correspondence to current and prospective donors.
Work with the Controller to establish a system for accurate recordkeeping of fulfillment of individual, corporate, and foundation donor benefits and a format for donor recognition reports. Maintain the records on a regular basis.
Assist with donor research and reporting, including preparation of making packets for cultivation and solicitation meetings.
Ensures compliance with federal and state requirements, the Foundation policies and procedures, and donor restrictions for all financial and scholarship transactions funded by the Foundation.
Prepare audit schedules, compliance reports, tax returns, other reports for critical decision-making purposes.
Assist in responding to auditor inquiries and coordinate audit activities.
Accounting – general
Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and budgets and actual expenditures.
Develop process improvements to enhance accuracy and efficiency, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Correspond with other NGA staff members in a timely fashion. Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems of assigned funds and accounts.
Minimum of a BA; MS in Accounting/Finance, CPA, and/or MBA preferred
5+ years of accounting and finance experience in a non-profit environment
Experience in the areas of fund accounting and sales and use tax is required
Experience with Avalara software is preferred but not required
Experience with QuickBooks Online and/or Intacct is preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of non-profit fund accounting for a 501(c)(3) and sales-use tax is required

Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers
Must be detailed-oriented and highly organized
Must be self-motivated, disciplined, and able to work with minimal supervision
Must be organized and effective in time management
