Staff Counsel II will be an attorney with several years of relevant legal experience. Under the direction and supervision of the General Counsel and senior members of the Legal team, Staff Counsel II will be able to handle a wide variety of assigned projects, and will be capable of independently providing legal counsel and practical business advice to SOA staff and volunteer leaders on areas of legal riskand helping staff implement legal advice in a cost efficient and timely manner.Staff Counsel II is expected to be a legal generalist, but will have (or will develop) defined areas of expertise valuable to the management of SOA’s legal affairs. Staff Counsel II will also work with and oversee the work of outside counsel.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Law degree (JD) from an accredited US law school.
Licensed to practice law, or eligible to register as in-house counsel, in the state of Illinois.
Minimum of 4 years practicing law, with relevant experience in general corporate/commercial practice and in one or more areas of relevant specialization.
Experience working for not-for-profit organizations or professional associations, or working with them as clients, is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Proficiency in conducting legal research using online database tools and services (e.g., WestLaw or Lexis/Nexis)
Strong analytical capabilities and attention to detail.
Ability to provide accurate, timely and practical legal advice on routine business matters with limited or no supervision.
Strong interpersonal skills, with ability to build relationships with and influence co-workers/clients.
Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of people including staff, volunteers, Board Members and outside attorneys.
Willingness to educate him/herself in areas of law in which experience is lacking.
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously
