The EBD Manager/Coordinator identifies clinical areas in need of research and supports the development of systematic reviews and clinical practice guidelines to aid pediatric dentists, as well as general dentists, in maintaining and improving children’s oral health. To achieve this end, the EBD Manager/Coordinator directs volunteer workgroups, liaises with committees, and partners with external stakeholders to implement evidence-based dentistry guidelines and policies.
Note that the title will be determined depending on the education credentials and level of prior experience of the candidate.
Oversees and advises the Evidence-Based Dentistry Committee in the commissioning of evidence-based systematic reviews and guidelines.
Manages the work of the volunteer member reviewers; this includes vetting members’ qualifications for inclusion on workgroups, assigning, checking work and managing conflicts.
Organizes in-person and phone conferences.
Guides the workgroup through the development of evidence-based systematic reviews following standards set by national and international organizations, such as the Cochrane Collaboration; performing the following tasks:
Creating PICO questions
Developing inclusion/exclusion criteria
Designing and executing literature searches
Designing extraction forms
Reviewing studies and extracting data into tables
Assessing study quality
Cleaning up raw data and statistical analysis
Overseeing the screening of abstracts and full-text studies
Creating the PRISMA flowchart
Validating extracted data
Exporting tables for analysis
Synthetizing the evidence base through creation of GRADE tables
Drafts and edits systematic reviews.
Guides the workgroup through the development of evidence-based guidelines following standards set by national and international organizations, such as the Guidelines International Network and the AGREE Research Trust; performing the following tasks:
Identifying or creating foundational systematic review
Facilitating interpretation of evidence tables and profiles
Synthesizing the evidence base through creation of GRADE tables
Drafts and edits guidelines.
Maintains, in collaboration with AAPD members and committees, a triage of guideline topics to be addressed that meets the clinical practice needs of dentists serving children.
Serves as AAPD’s knowledge base for clinical quality improvement issues and trends.
Directs strategies for the compilation, review, marketing and dissemination of scientific literature as directed by an EBD workgroup.
Performs ongoing literature searches to confirm currency of evidentiary base.
Orders studies and maintains study files and citation manager libraries.
Ensures process and product are consistent with the inclusion criteria of National Guideline Clearinghouse (NGC) of the Department of Health and Human Services Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).
Creates and maintains partnerships related to guidelines and evidence-based dentistry with other organizations, drafting texts as needed.
Writes articles on AAPD EBD activities for AAPD and other dental and health publications.
Performs other duties as directed.
The Evidence-Based Dentistry Manager/Coordinator must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, excellent organizational skills, strong attention to detail, multi-tasking abilities, willingness and aptitude to learn. A strong science background and a functional understanding of basic statistical principles is a must. Educational requirements: Master’s degree in public health, informatics, epidemiology, health statistics, health policy, or a related field. Experience in an association, non-profit organization, university, or government setting utilizing comparable skills. Individual must have excellent computer literacy in MS Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.). Ability to work independently is a critical. Preferably has experience in the development of systematic reviews and guidelines:
Expertise in the development of evidence-based guidelines and/or systematic reviews.
Competence in reference managerial software (e.g., EndNote, Zotero).
Competence software for conducting meta-analyses (e.g., Revman).
Competence in grading/rating systems (e.g., GRADE).
