Who we are looking for:
The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) is in search of a Human Resources and Employee Relations Manager to support the entire organization in the area of performance management and partner with managers and staff in assigned departments on human-resource related needs to support the achievement of business goals and priorities. The HR Manager will work in collaboration with HR leadership to provide employee relations services for ASCO’s workforce and will be responsible for developing and administering programs that drive effective performance and minimize personnel-related risks.
Business Partner for Assigned Department Groups
Maintains effective level of business literacy regarding departments’ work, goals, business plans, culture and staff, in order to help departments meet their business needs. Participates in team meetings within departments to proactively develop solutions that support business strategy and to build productive internal and external working relationships.
Works with employees and managers to proactively assess and anticipate HR-related needs. Provides HR policy interpretation and guidance when appropriate. Liaises with HR and other functional specialists to identify, develop and execute integrated solutions to build and sustain a productive workforce and environment.
Provides performance management guidance to line management (e.g., coaching, counseling, strategies.) Works closely with management and employees to improve work relationships, build morale, and increase productivity and retention.
Maintains effective relationships with client managers, staff and others to help facilitate employee engagement, minimize problems and address situations quickly and professionally. Builds and sustains open and effective communication channels with staff at all levels.
Advises managers on promotion, job expansions, and pay adjustment proposals.
Reinforces the communication and rollout of new/updated programs, policies, and compliance activities to department groups.
Provides back up to HR Business Partners in providing support to departments.
Performance Management and Accountability
Manages ASCO’s performance management process, timelines, and communications to ensure organizational participation. Tracks and reports on metrics and trends. Oversees and manages an electronic performance appraisal system that aligns the workforce with ASCO’s goals and initiatives.
Maintains in-depth knowledge of legal requirements related to day-to-day management of employees, reducing legal risks and ensuring regulatory compliance. Partners with the legal department as needed/required. Conducts periodic audits of human resource activities to ensure compliance with laws, policies and procedures.
Manages and resolves complex employee relations issues. Provides advice and counsel to supervisors and employees regarding employment policies, performance concerns and improvement plans. Conducts effective, thorough and objective investigations issues and complaints and recommends resolutions and disciplinary actions.
Reviews and evaluates disciplinary actions to include written warnings, suspensions and dismissals etc., to ensure consistent application of company policies.
Manages the voluntary offboarding process, including exit interviews and tracking analytics. Analyzes trends and metrics in partnership with the HR group to develop solutions, programs and policies.
Recommends and revises HR policies and procedures related to compliance, performance, accountability and employee relations, as necessary.
HR Team Member
Works in alignment with and advances ASCO values, standards and organizational culture.
Participates in projects and performs other relevant duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree, preferably in human resource management or related field or equivalent level of experience, training and education. Five to eight years of experience working in Human Resources, with at least 3-4 years providing employee/labor relations services to manager level employees. Experience supervising individual contributors. Proficient experience with Microsoft Office Suite or related software. Proficiency with or the ability to quickly learn the organization’s HRIS and talent management systems.
Preferred Education and Experience
Experience supervising managers. Certified Professional (PHR/SHRM-CP) or Senior Certified Professional (SPHR/SHRM-SCP) credential. Affiliation with human resource programs and HR organizations.
Business Acumen within a corporate, professional association or non-profit organization. Knowledge of federal and state employment regulations HR Expertise in performance management, employee/labor relations, personnel counselling and investigations. Strong interpersonal skills with an emphasis on conflict management and effectiveness in high stress and emotionally charged situations. Effective written and verbal communication including diplomatic “straight talk” and effectiveness with differing work and communication styles. Strong consultation and coaching skills, including advocacy and engaging clients in solution.
