About AOCS
The American Oil Chemists' Society (AOCS) is an international professional organization based in Urbana, Illinois, USA dedicated to providing the support network for those involved with the science and technology related to oils, fats, proteins, surfactants, and related materials. Founded in 1909, AOCS has approximately 2500 members in 90 countries who are active in a total of ten divisions, representing the major technical interests of the members. There are seven sections, representing members by geographic location and interests within Europe, Canada, India, Latin America, Australia/Pacific Rim, China and Asia.
Our history is one of success built on the contributions of hundreds of volunteers over the past eleven decades. At the start, there were nine dedicated individuals who created the Society of Cotton Products Analysts, as AOCS was first known. These nine charter members sought to offer proven methods for analysis of cottonseed products, the need for which still forms the basic foundation of AOCS.
The technical activities that inspired the founders of the Society still exist and have expanded. The book of Official Methods and Recommended Practices of the AOCS contains... more than 400 analytical methods with proven global reliability. The AOCS Laboratory Proficiency Program (LPP) is the world's most extensive and respected collaborative proficiency testing program for oil- and fat-related commodities, oilseeds, oilseed meals and edible fats and proteins. AOCS organizes meetings, symposia, conferences, courses and webinars that cover many topics and fields, ranging from the effect of various fats used in infant formula on brain development, to the constitution of laundry detergents that will require less water to meet environmental standards in the future. AOCS Press publishes three peer-reviewed technical journals, technical books related to the members areas of study and practice, and the member magazine INFORM (International News on Fats, Oils and Related Materials). Journals are the JAOCS (Journal of the American Oil Chemists’ Society), Lipids, and JSD (Journal of Surfactants and Detergents).
