NRMP is looking for a Senior Communications Director to evaluate and oversee the day-to-day communications activities of the organization. The Senior Communications Director will develop, promote, and maintain communications across various channels to optimize the distribution of information to the appropriate audiences. The Senior Communications Director will work with the Chief Compliance and Communications Officer to develop communication strategies that increase community engagement with NRMP and provide a deeper understanding of NRMP’s mission and priorities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Social Media and Community Engagement (30%)
Directs NRMP’s social media presence
Serve as a primary point for creating social media content that highlights NRMP activities and initiatives and promotes broader medical education topics when appropriate.
Develop and/or work with vendors to develop graphics, multimedia, FAQs, and other materials to support online posts
Develop strategies and identify opportunities to build and expand community engagement; showcase NRMP activities and initiatives, comment on and leverage important topics within the GME community and increase exchanges with GME community members to advance the organization’s visibility and reputation as a thought leader.
Direct online constituents with customer support inquiries to appropriate resources; oversee online conversations with users and review NRMP responses to postings, questions, and comments to ensure responses are correct, concise, and portrays NRMP positively
Use analytics to monitor social media and email usage, growth, and engagement; prepares reports to transmit findings to Board of Directors
Build partnerships with other industry organizations to promote Match Week and other important NRMP milestones and initiatives
Collaborate with internal content experts to maintain consistency in messaging across various platforms
NRMP Public Website (30%)
Oversee website content development and maintenance to ensure alignment with NRMP strategic goals and the needs of constituents
Collaborate with internal content experts to develop and write website content; support executive leadership in strategic analysis of website design, flow, and function
Collaborate as needed with NRMP IT vendor on updates to website content management system (e.g., installation of new plug-ins; analytics tracking)
Develop infographics and other visual learning aids to promote/enhance existing messaging on research, Match results, and other projects
Work with leadership to develop online resources for constituents to increase awareness of and understanding about the Match process; work with other NRMP staff as needed to design and build new resources promoting research, policy, or Board of Directors action items
Maintain comprehensive website map to ensure prompt content updated promptly and accurately
Manage website content editorial needs
Public Relations (30%)
Leverage the e-newsletter to highlight Matching Program activities and trends in the GME community to increase engagement and promote understanding and support of NRMP mission, purpose, and strategic focus
Draft press releases and other materials (e.g., Annual Report) that effectively showcase and promote activities and accomplishments of NRMP
Track media inquiries and requests for interviews; consult with the President/CEO or other leadership on appropriate responses and/or direct inquiries to appropriate NRMP spokespersons
Track news about graduate medical education through regular review of news media and information from other medical education associations, specialty groups, and trade publications; report findings to senior management team
Support crisis communications campaigns as needed, reaching out to NRMP constituents and the press with current information about the status of NRMP activities
Conduct periodic surveys to identify constituent engagement with current communications practices and inform new offerings
Manage press, e-newsletter, media, and report editorial needs
Email (10%)
Work with Match operations team to review message themes
Prepare new or update existing email content for Main Residency Match and Fellowship Matches
Ensure accuracy and consistency of formatting; make recommendations to management for consideration
Maintain an internal tracking system for disseminating information through various communications channels (e.g., website, social media email) to ensure timely, seamless messaging.
A successful candidate will have the expertise and skills described below.
EDUCATION, PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in communications, marketing, public relations, or related area; Master’s degree preferred
Five to seven years of professional experience in a communications position, preferably in a higher education, medical education, or healthcare association setting
TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication; consistently able to identify and effectively message in “voice” that is appropriate for the project/audience
Knowledge of and experience with WordPress content management system, Cision/PR Newswire, Constant Contact, and Adobe Creative Suite software preferred
Proven track record of managing social media platforms, including Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter
Experience analyzing and translating information for colleagues, executive leadership, and the press
Demonstrated ability to translate complex business rules, policies, and data into easily understood language for Matching Program participants and other third parties
Knowledge of or strong interest in learning about graduate medical education and the Match process
Strong proofreading, editing, and PowerPoint presentation skills
Superior organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities, often with inflexible deadlines
Ability to build relationships and collaborate with external consultants, technical staff, and the media
Ability to function well under pressure and maintain professional demeanor when dealing with peak periods in the Match process
Ability to work well independently and as a team member

INTERACTIONS
External:
Frequent contact with communications staff at medical schools and teaching hospitals
Routine contact with media and press
Routine contact with Match applicants via social media
Infrequent contact with teaching hospital institutional officials, residency program directors, and medical school student affairs deans primarily by way of social media and email
Internal:
Frequent interaction with other NRMP staff in addressing and developing marketing, communications and public relations materials

This position is primarily sedentary in the Washington DC office OR REMOTE with occasional overnight travel and may require some bending and lifting.
