Job Summary/Description Oversees all of NASS' Health Policy & Advocacy activities; including coding, reimbursement, coverage, regulatory and legislative issues. Provides primary staff support to Health Policy & Advocacy Council, Coding Committee, CPT, and RUC Advisors. Serves as a NASS representative to various coalitions (eg,Alliance of Specialty Medicine, Regulatory Relief Coalition, Multi-society Pain Workgroup and AMA) and manages activities (including analysis and preparation of comment letters) related to Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services proposals and rules (primarily Medicare) related to payment and regulatory policies. Duties and Responsibilities • Directs society’s health policy & advocacy efforts and coordinates dissemination of health policy & advocacy related information to the membership, other relevant societies, government and other interested parties. • Provides primary staff support to the following groups: Health Policy & Advocacy Council, Coding Committee, CPT and RUC efforts and other committees as assigned. • Works with Health Policy leaders to facilitate NASS efforts on CPT and RUC processes; including preparation and planning for CPT and RUC meetings with necessary documents, logistics and support for NASS representatives. • Provides oversight and coordinates staff support for all member coding inquiries, coding educational programming, Coverage Committee and Payor Policy Review Committee. Works with Government and third-party payors in advocating and promoting for appropriate coverage decisions. • Oversees project management of Common Coding Scenarios for Spine Care, including working with internal staff and the Coding Committee. • Prepares recommendations/reports for the Board, Councils and committees, publications and other documents reflecting background, policy positions, etc., translating complex concepts into easily understood documents. Participates in promotion of activities of the society through development of website/publication content and promotion of programs/products. • Monitors the spine field, including FDA, CMS, HHS, etc. for issues of relevance to NASS Health Policy & Advocacy program, as well as items from the AMA and other specialty groups. • Manages all aspects of project and department management, including budgeting, planning, timelines and implementation. • Serves as primary contact for society members and staff from internal and external groups with questions regarding health policy and advocacy activities of the society. • Collaborates with the Health Policy Division, various Councils, Committees and Sections to achieve common and overlapping goals and pursue direction necessary for growth and success for the society. • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Science, Health Policy, Public Policy or related field required, advanced degree preferred.
Experience Minimum five years of experience working in a health care setting; health care administration; or medical society/association management setting. Strong background and experience with the AMA CPT and RUC processes are required.
Skills Necessary • Strong communication skills for developing and maintaining internal and external business relationships. • Excellent organizational and planning skills to manage multiple projects in a deadline-oriented environment and ability to adapt to changing priorities. • Understanding of and experience with the health care system and CPT coding terminology. • Ability to learn and apply new concepts quickly. • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and 365 as well as videoconferencing programs. Experience with CRM software a plus. Supervision Exercised • Supervision of Manager of Health Policy and Assistant Manager of Health Policy. Relationships • Internal: Works with the Executive Management Group (EMG), Directors and Senior Directors and other staff members from various areas within NASS • External: Works with NASS Board of Directors, members, committee members, industry/other society/Government/payor representatives. Travel • May require travel 4-6 times per year, including some weekends. Job Conditions • Normal office environment and exposure to glare/eyestrain of computer screen. • Average to heavy computer usage. Manual dexterity to operate a computer keyboard. • Ability to lift boxes weighing up to 40 lbs occasionally when preparing shipments, organizing inventory, or staffing programs. • Periodic evening/weekend conference calls and in-person meetings
