POSITION: Health Policy,Coding and Reimbursement Associate
STATUS: Exempt
REPORTS TO: Health Policy, Quality, and Reimbursement Director
OVERVIEW
The Health Policy, Coding and Reimbursement Associate reports to the Health Policy, Quality and Reimbursement Director and works with the Coding, Reimbursement and Quality Improvement Associate in providing staff support to the Committee on Healthcare Policy, Coding and Reimbursement. In providing this support, this position will work collaboratively with coworkers, members, committee members, and occasionally others in the coding and reimbursement industry.
The Health Policy, Coding and Reimbursement Associate’s primary responsibilities include monitoring payer policies; code changes and guidelines; contribution to and maintenance of the association’s coding and billing resources and courses; and assisting members with their coding and billing needs. Member assistance may include but not limited to, guiding members with proper code selection; deciphering reimbursement policies and/or help with troubleshooting claim denials. This Associate must stay abreast of code changes and coding edits; third-party payer coverage policies; Medicare and Medicaid policies; and changes and/or policies affecting medical and dental claim filing. This Associate must also monitor industry discussion regarding the implementation of ICD-11-CM in the United States. To accomplish these tasks, this Associate must possess extensive knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and CDT coding systems and their relation to physician reimbursement. Therefore, this position requires experience with procedural and diagnostic coding systems; understanding the relation to physician reimbursement; and being proficient in health policy analysis.
The Health Policy, Coding and Reimbursement Associate is accountable for writing the Health Policy Perspectives column in the AAOMS Today as well as health policy content for other AAOMS publications, such as the Advocacy E-Newsletter and OMS Communique. In addition, the Health Policy, Coding and Reimbursement Associate is responsible for developing and maintaining coding and reimbursement resources on the appropriate and corresponding sections of the AAOMS web site.
This position must also monitor state insurance codes; the Federal Register; the Policy Reporter database; NUCC; WEDI; CMS and other payer websites to stay abreast of coding and/or reimbursement policy changes and laws that affect OMS. This position is responsible for monitoring and developing communications related to, changes to national payment policies and other initiatives that may impact our members. This position will also prepare comments to CMS and other agencies implementing policy changes on behalf of AAOMS.
The Health Policy, Coding and Reimbursement Associate serves as the primary staff liaison to the AMA Relative Value Update Committee and assists the Director of Health Policy, Quality & Reimbursement with identifying RUC initiatives impacting OMS as well as the RUC survey processes as needed to ensure that these coding and payment systems keep up with current OMS practice. This Associate also follows the ADA’s Code Maintenance Committee, participating in meetings and conference calls as needed.
This position will contribute to the development, planning, and implementation of the AAOMS’ in-person and online coding and billing courses or continuing education programs as well as provide on-site staff support at all in-person workshops. This Associate is the primary staff in developing and presenting the Masters Coding Workshop
The Health Policy, Coding and Reimbursement Associate also provides year-round staff support to the Committee on Health Care Policy, Coding, and Reimbursement including assistance with coordinating CHCPR member projects, handling committee meeting logistics, and assistance with preparing meeting / conference call agendas and meeting minutes.
The Health Policy, Coding and Reimbursement Associate may also handle miscellaneous projects as directed by the Manager and/or the Associate Executive Director of the Practice Management & Government Affairs
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Develop and maintain resources to assist the membership with coding and reimbursement
Respond to member inquiries on issues related to coding and reimbursement
Maintain tracking system on coding and reimbursement inquiries for trend analysis
Notify membership of changes in coding and health policy
Provide technical and staff support to the Committee on Healthcare Policy, Coding and Reimbursement
Assist with the implementation of the AAOMS in-person and on-line coding courses and webinars
Assist with the preparation and coordination of new/revised code proposals
Develop new programs and resources for the membership as necessary
Provide support for the Health Policy, Quality and Reimbursement Manager
Serve as primary coding inquiry liaison through phone and email requests
Monitor CMS, NUCC, WEDI, HHS and Correct Coding Initiative activities
Monitor and refresh coding and reimbursement resources page of AAOMS website
Update AAOMS Coding and Reimbursement Library as necessary
Coordinate/assist in the content development and logistics of coding courses, committee meetings and/or conferences, as necessary.
Participate in national conferences, association meetings and offsite participant recruitment efforts, as appropriate and/or directed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work independently but collaboratively
Ability to handle complex coding and billing issues
Excellent organizational, time and project management skills
3 or more years of knowledge of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and Current Dental Terminology (CDT) coding systems and Internal Classification of Diseases (ICD) coding system
Knowledge of medical and dental terminology and physiology
General knowledge of OMS, medical or dental clinical practice, specific familiarity with frequently utilized procedures
Experience with policy research, data analysis, electronic health records, and practice management
Knowledge of government and private payor policies
