The Wilderness Medical Society (WMS), an international association with 4,000+ members, is seeking a full-time Director of Membership, Marketing, and Communications. This dynamic and fully remote position will enhance member engagement, grow our community, and elevate our brand through strategic marketing and communications initiatives. The WMS is a global community of medical professionals devoted to facilitating high-quality care in the outdoors. Through education, research, conferences, adventure education trips, membership, and certifications, the WMS equips individuals to provide expert medical care in remote environments. While headquartered in Austin, our team is fully remote, offering a flexible, mission-driven remote work environment with opportunities to travel to beautiful locations for conferences two times per year.
Position Overview
Are you a creative, organized, and strategic communicator with a passion for excellence? As the Director of Membership, Marketing & Communications, you will drive how the Wilderness Medical Society engages with its members and the public. This is a dynamic role for a self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced environment and excels in writing, design, and building relationships. The ideal candidate is outgoing, innovative, and can balance strategic vision with hands-on execution. You will develop and implement initiatives to grow membership, strengthen our brand, and communicate the value of WMS to a diverse, international audience.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Membership Recruitment & Engagement
Be the go-to contact for member inquiries regarding renewals, benefits, event registrations, etc. via email, text and phone
Serve as staff liaison and collaborate with the Membership & Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion committees to execute and communicate to the Board about annual goals tied to inclusive and diverse member recruitment and engagement.
Build and implement partnerships, discount programs or joint initiatives with like-minded organizations to enhance membership value; Create and measure reciprocal discounts and promo codes for tracking effectiveness.
Represent the WMS at 1-2 tradeshows a year, recruiting new members and strengthening our community via hosted social events.
Develop and maintain automated touchpoints (welcome emails, renewals, birthday discounts) to boost member engagement.
Conduct periodic membership surveys and communicate results to applicable staff. Oversee Student Interest Groups (SIGs), providing support and resources to future wilderness medicine professionals.
Drive participation in our online platform, Mobilize, and organize monthly Fireside Chat webinars.
Marketing & Communications
Lead WMS email marketing campaigns (2-3 emails per month) and coordinate messaging via Constant Contact for monthly newsletter, upcoming events and deadlines for programs.
Create eye-catching e-mails, flyers, graphics, videos, and promotional materials for WMS offerings and events.
Maintain brand consistency across all channels (web, print, social) and oversee social media presence, posting member announcements, magazine articles, relevant news stories, recording links, and other content 2-3 times per week on key platforms - primarily Facebook and Instagram but also X, YouTube, and LinkedIn.
Monitor Google AdWords and Analytics accounts.
Serve as the primary media contact, write press releases for conferences and new certification recipients, and draft communications for staff and leadership.
Manage the online WMS store by promoting products, overseeing inventory, and creating new items to drive sales.
Wilderness Medicine Magazine
Edit and proofread articles and manage the publication process in collaboration with authors/the committee.
Maintain and update author guidelines and website design as directed by committee.
Track readership stats, solicit new content, and support the quarterly WMM Committee meetings.
Conference Support & Affiliates
Assist in organizing and staffing a minimum of two annual conferences including preparing PowerPoint presentations, creating signage/the conference guide, staffing the registration desk, taking and posting photos, and managing exhibitors.
Collaborate with our assistant to manage the WMS Affiliate Program, a partnership with mission-aligned organizations, and implement other ideas for non-dues revenue.

Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree and 6-8 years of full-time work experience
Ability and willingness to travel out of state for 3-6 days, 3-5 times per year with potentially long work hours (12-15 hour days).
Excellent customer service and verbal and written communication skills (in-person, phone, and email communication).
Preferred Technical Skills:
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PPT, Outlook)
Experience in/with the following systems: database management, content management, video editing, graphic design, email marketing, online engagement communities
Basic familiarity with html coding
Other Skills/Requirements:
Impeccably detail-oriented with effective organizational, problem solving, and time-management skills, including the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Association, member-oriented, or non-profit experience preferred; medical association experience a plus.
Self-driven with ability to produce high-quality, accurate work with little oversight.
Capable of setting goals, creating timelines, and meeting goals and deadlines.
Reliable team-player with willingness to step in and help teammates out when needed.
Flexible and able to adapt to leaders with varying leadership styles.
Willingness to seek, provide, and accept feedback.
