Basic Function: Summarizes higher education court cases and legal developments and assists with research and other projects relevant to higher education law
Reports To: Senior Managing Legal Resources Attorney for Publications
Position Term: August 1, 2025 – August 31, 2026 (promotive opportunities available)
Duties and Responsibilities
Reviews developing higher education caselaw, statutes, and regulations (daily); Prepares summaries and materials for email and online distribution to members (weekly)
Monitors regulatory and postsecondary industry websites/publications for current events and trends impacting the practice of higher education law (daily)
Works closely with other Legal Resources staff to review and respond to member requests for NACUA resources, including programming and publications (as needed)
Categorizes NACUA publications, programs, forms, and other documents by topic for appropriate placement on the website’s legal resource pages (as needed)
Cite checks and formats NACUANOTES (monthly)
Works on special research projects, drafts memoranda, and assumes additional responsibilities as assigned by Legal Resources attorneys (as needed)
Participates in Legal Resources Department meetings (weekly)
Attends and staffs NACUA programming, including briefings, webinars, workshops, and the Annual Conference (as needed)
Qualifications/Skills
Essential
A Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school
Must have taken a state bar examination (may be awaiting results)
Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, including the ability to work cooperatively and function successfully in a team-oriented, fast-paced work environment with diverse groups of members and staff
Excellent legal research, analytical, writing, and communication skills
Ability to manage multiple tasks and assignments effectively
Excellent organizational skills
Strong work ethic and ability to work independently
Commitment to practicing and promoting NACUA’s core values of quality, service, civility, collegiality, diversity, inclusiveness, and respect
Preferred
Prior experience with writing and editing legal material
Familiarity with higher education legal issues
This position requires residence near, or relocation to, the Washington, DC area.
NACUA offers a hybrid schedule, which requires working in-office on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Please note that NACUA’s President & CEO retains discretion to amend this schedule.

NACUA's purpose is to enhance legal assistance to colleges and universities by educating attorneys and administrators as to the nature of campus legal issues.
