POSITION SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
The Community Specialist supports AAP’s member communities, councils, and committees by providing administrative coordination, fostering engagement, and ensuring a consistent and high-quality volunteer experience. This role manages the Physiatry Connect online community platform and serves as staff liaison to multiple committees and component groups, helping advance membership growth, connection, knowledge sharing, and organizational priorities.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Coordinate the Physiatry Connect online community form, including member access, discussion moderation, and content organization.
Encourage member participation by promoting discussions, sharing resources, and highlighting community activities.
Collaborate with Communications and Membership departments to promote community initiatives and benefits.
Serve as staff liaison and provide administrative, membership, and project management support for:
AAP Regenerative Rehabilitation Coalition (ARRC)
Pediatric Rehabilitation
Research Committee
Public Policy Committee
VA Council
Coordinate meeting schedules, agendas, minutes, and follow-up actions.
Support committee projects and initiatives that align with AAP’s strategic plan.
Assist in onboarding new volunteers and ensuring a positive volunteer experience.
Identify opportunities to enhance membership value through community programming and collaboration.
Ensure data integrity within the association management system (AMS) and Higher Logic system related to group assignments and council/ committee participation.
Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent work experience
1–3 years of experience in administration/ customer service, volunteer coordination, or community management
Strong organizational and administrative skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to manage multiple committees and deadlines simultaneously
Strong customer service and relationship-building skills
Ability to work collaboratively with volunteers and staff
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications required
Experience with online community platforms or AMS systems preferred
Knowledge of association or nonprofit environments preferred

The Association of Academic Physiatrists (AAP) is a professional medical society of physiatrists who are dedicated to improving patient care by advancing the field of physiatry through research, education and leadership. AAP currently serves over 3,000 members including physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) department chairs, program directors, residents and fellows, researchers, medical student educators, administrative directors, program coordinators, and others involved or interested in academic physiatry. The AAP has an official journal, the American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, holds an Annual Meeting and various other meetings throughout the year, and leads a number of projects, programs, and activities to support and enhance academic physiatry.
